The New York Medieval Society offers sincere congratulations to Professor Costanza Dopfel, Professor and former Chair of Art and Art History at Saint Mary’s College of California, on receiving the NYMS Book Subvention Award to support the inclusion of 71 color images in her forthcoming volume, Maternal Materialities: Objects, Rituals and Material Evidence of Medieval and Early Modern Childbirth.
This book of scholarly essays, which will be published by Brepols Publishers in 2024, ‘explores the material advantages and disadvantages of motherhood, the food and objects present in the birthing room, the evidence and memorialization of death in childbirth, attitudes towards the pregnant body, the material culture of healing and the ritual items used during childbirth.’
